Tummy Tucks and Pregnancy

Many patients ask about pregnancy after abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) surgery. Concerns with tearing the skin or the inability to stretch and make room for the baby are common anxieties. The fact is, the skin is very resilient and elastic, and after a tummy tuck procedure your skin will still be able to stretch, making enough room for the baby. In many cases physicians recommend delaying a tummy tuck procedure until after you are certain that you do not want any more children because it could reverse some of the results of the procedure.

Some of the benefits of the abdominoplasty may be undone after another baby, requiring touch up later on. However, pregnancy after a tummy tuck is possible. Many women are able to have a vaginal delivery after certain types of caesarean sections, which are much more invasive than abdominoplasty.

Dr. Weil recommends that you wait until the incisions are fully healed before you decide to get pregnant, but even if the good news catches you unaware; the abdomen grows slowly and allows enough time for the skin to stretch as it normally would. Don't worry about reopening the incisions; the scar tissue that develops during the healing process is much stronger than your normal skin. The incisions will not re-open or break once you are fully healed. Several months after pregnancy, if diet and exercise fail to reduce your abdomen back to your desired shape and size, a secondary abdominoplasty may be recommended. Please Contact the clinic for more information on abdominoplasty, and don't hesitate to ask Dr. Weil any questions you have concerning this procedure and how it may affect your future family plans.
