Does Breast Augmentation Cause the Ripple Effect?

Every breast implant has some degree of rippling - a surface irregularity. Some implants have very little and some have a lot. If you have a small pre-operative cup size, your surgeon will probably have to use your muscles to help cover the implant. Or, if you increase your size from an A cup to a D cup and have little breast tissue, the doctor may also have to use your muscle tissue, and this can cause rippling.

Even when the implant is placed behind your pectoral muscle, rippling can happen on the sides or at the bottom of your breast.

Some minor ripples are not even visible. Larger ripples can be felt and sometimes seen if they are plentiful. The degree to which your skin wrinkles depends on several factors.

You may experience more wrinkling if you:

  • Are thinner with a thin fat layer
  • Have a small operative breast size
  • Increase to a large implant size
  • Prefer saline over silicone
  • Have an inadequate volume of saline inside your implant

You may experience less wrinkling if you:

  • Are heavier with thicker fat layer
  • Have a larger pre-operative breast size
  • Increase a small implant size
  • Prefer silicone over saline
  • Optimize the volume of saline inside your implant

Post Weight Loss Cosmetic Surgery

You have shed pounds and pounds and now you want to get rid of that droopy skin once and for all. There are various body shaping procedures that cosmetic surgeons can perform, to uncover the body you've worked so hard to obtain.

Body contouring is also ideal for mothers following pregnancy or after a surgical procedure such as a gastric bypass operation.

Some body contouring procedures include:

  • Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) - Any skin causing the abdomen to protrude is removed. The remaining skin is tightened to the muscles of the abdomen wall.
  • Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) - Flaps of loose skin are removed around the arm, resulting in a sleeker, more toned appearance.
  • Thighplasty (Hip and Thigh Lift) - Loose skin is removed around the hips and thigh - one of the primary regions where fat is stored.
  • Neck Lift - Hangs of skin are removed from the front of the neck, eliminating any double chin and giving your face a slimmer appearance.
  • Liposuction - This procedure is used to remove small remaining amounts of fatty tissue from your hips, thighs, and abdomen to create smooth, sleek contours.
  • Breast Lift and Augmentation - Since your breasts are mainly fatty tissue, their appearance can be greatly affected by weight loss. Breast augmentation and breast lifts can help restore your natural breast volume and lift your bustline following weight loss.

Breast Ptosis Correction (Mastopexy) With No Breast Implants

If you are looking for perkier, more aesthetically pleasing breasts, a mastopexy may be your answer.

A mastopexy is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to lift and re-contour your breast. The result is firmer, more youthful looking breasts.

Breast lift surgery will not significantly change the size of your breasts, nor will it round out the upper portion of your breast. If you want your breasts to look fuller or smaller, you should consider breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery.

A woman's breasts are prone to change with time. You may notice drooping and a loss in firmness as you age. Some of these changes and loss of skin elasticity can be caused by:

  • Weight fluctuations
  • Aging
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Gravity
  • Genetics

The incisions are made at the areola (pigmented skin). Once they heal, the scars are barely - if at all - noticeable. While some people experience pain following the procedure, the discomfort is usually not severe and can be controlled by medication.

Mastopexy candidates should be mentally and emotionally stable with realistic surgical expectations and in good physical health.

Gynecomastia: Male Breast Reduction Surgery

"Woman-like breasts," the Greek translation for the medical term gynecomastia, is a common condition among men. In fact, it's found in about one-third of the male population and can affect one or both breasts. Though it often begins at puberty, this overdevelopment can happen to men at any age.

Gynecomastia can result from hormonal changes, genetics, disease, or the use of certain drugs. If you are a man suffering from this condition, you may feel self-conscious or even avoid physical activities like running or swimming. Your sexuality may also be impaired by your desire to hide your overdeveloped breasts.

If gynecomastia is negatively impacting your life, surgery can be performed to remove the type of tissue that's causing your breast enlargement. That tissue is different for everyone - it could be glandular, fatty or fatty-glandular.

Your cosmetic surgeon has two choices: make a small incision under your nipple and surgically remove the excess tissue, or remove the tissue with liposuction through a similar incision at the edge of your nipple. Combining both procedures is common, and often creates the best outcome.

Men who are in good physical health and whose breast development has stabilized are good candidates for this surgery. Experts recommend trying alternative medical treatments before going under the knife.

After your surgery is completed, you may experience some bruising and excessive bleeding. Other possible complications include: altered shape of your nipple, loss of sensation in or around the area affected, and skin rippling. A typical recovery takes one to two weeks.
