Liposuction Q & A

How does liposuction work?

Liposuction shouldn’t be considered a weight loss technique, but rather a way to reduce your fat and recontour certain areas of your body. When you’re born, your body contains a certain number of fat cells, and that number doesn’t fluctuate throughout your life. When you lose or gain weight, the size of your existing fat cells decreases or increases. Through liposuction, Dr. Weil removes fat cells, which don’t regenerate.

What areas does liposuction treat?

Liposuction is a great option for those hard-to-tackle areas, such as your:

  • Abdomen
  • Thighs, both inner and outer
  • Back
  • Upper arms
  • Hips
  • Buttocks

Liposuction is an ideal solution if you’ve worked hard to lose weight, maybe even hitting your ideal weight, but stubborn pockets of fat are hampering the overall effect of your hard work.

What happens during a liposuction procedure?

During a liposuction procedure, which is performed under general anesthesia, Dr. Weil injects fluid into the areas where your fat needs to be removed in order to help the fat move more freely. Then, Dr. Weil inserts tiny tubes, or cannulas, through barely-noticeable cuts and sucks out the loosened fat.

What is the recovery time after liposuction?

Immediately following your liposuction, you may experience some temporary bruising or swelling, along with some discomfort.  These issues typically resolve themselves within a week or two. Dr. Weil may also recommend that you wear a compression garment over the treated area for several weeks in order to reduce swelling.

Most patients are able to get back to their daily routine within several days to two weeks after a liposuction procedure, depending on the extent and location of the treatment.

When will I see results?

Results take some time to reveal themselves as your body adjusts. In fact, you may be temporarily larger due to swelling, but this is short-lived as your body heals itself. Generally, within a few weeks, you’ll see noticeable results, with optimal results in one to six months. Again, these timeframes depend on the extent of your liposuction procedure. Dr. Weil ensures that you understand the timeline and goals for your customized treatment beforehand.
