Tummy Tuck

What does a tummy tuck treat?

Your abdomen can be an incredibly frustrating area to deal with because of the many forces that work against it, such as:

Pregnancy

During a pregnancy, not only does your skin stretch to accommodate the growth of a new life, so do your muscles, making it harder to bounce back to your previous stomach after the birth of your child.

Weight loss

If you’ve successfully lost a considerable amount of weight, but you’re left with excess tissue with nowhere to go, Dr. Weil is able to remove this tissue during a tummy tuck.

Stubborn fat

It’s not your imagination — the fat along your midsection is hard to tackle. The soft fat in this area is subcutaneous fat, which collects more in some areas of your body than others, thanks to genetics and hormones. A tummy tuck permanently removes this fat.

Hormones

For women, fat naturally collects around the abdomen to protect your reproductive organs and a growing child. After menopause, your metabolism slows thanks to a decrease in hormones, making it harder to lose this fat.

What does a tummy tuck accomplish?

Through a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty, Dr. Weil accomplishes several objectives, including:

  • Removing excess fat
  • Removing excess tissue
  • Tightening weakened or separated abdominal muscles

The end result is a tighter, flatter, and more shapely abdominal area.

How is a tummy tuck procedure performed?

Dr. Weil offers both mini and full tummy tuck procedures, depending on your goals. Either way, the procedure is performed under full anesthesia and lasts one to five hours. During this time, Dr. Weil:

  • Makes an incision along your lower abdomen
  • Separates your skin from your abdominal wall
  • Tightens your abdominal muscles and stitches them together
  • Pulls your skin back over the area and removes the excess
  • Stitches your skin into place

Depending upon whether you undergo a full or mini tummy tuck, Dr. Weil may also have to reposition your belly button, which he does during the procedure.

When will I see results?

As with all the best things, it takes time for the full results of your tummy tuck to be realized. During the weeks following surgery, your abdomen may even appear larger due to swelling, but this goes away as your body heals. As well, it may be a week or two before you can stand up straight, so allow for some downtime after a tummy tuck.

Your full, bathing suit-ready results are a few months down the road as your body heals and the scarring naturally diminishes.
